Sharmay Mitchell is a Black British Caribbean writer from West London with a Masters in Health Psychology. BE THE UPLIFTER is her debut, self-illustrated, poetry collection.
An Apples & Snakes development programme alumnus, Sharmay has performed at the Royal Albert Hall for the 2020 Notting Hill Carnival virtual event, at the Queen’s Park Book Festival, and on Sky Arts' Rhymes & Life spoken word show.
Her poetry has been featured on the Lewisham Library Words podcast, in the 2019 Words By anthology for UNICEF, on the Poetry Archive’s YouTube channel and The Royal Society of Literature website.
Aside from writing and performing poetry, Sharmay is a self-taught stop-motion animator, whose work has been screened at the 2021 Raindance Film Festival, the 2024 Verve Poetry Film event, and the Willesden Gallery. She has also designed jewellery for an Issa Rae production.
Sharmay is currently working on her second poetry collection.
